This weekend, our members of the 180th Rover Crew put the Rover Scout motto to the test. The motto “Go Beyond” served as the guiding principle for the challenges we faced during our excursion to Garibaldi Provincial Park, and the proceeding hike along the Elfin Lakes trail.
Once beyond city limits, this event consisted of an 11km hike up to the Elfin Lakes campsite, setting up camp, and enjoying the company of fellow Rovers. Our group took on the challenge of hiking into the backcountry for overnight camping.
Snow, steep climbs, and beautiful scenery was laid out before us all throughout the trip. It was an arduous journey – hiking over multiple hills and valleys with snowshoes, before finally reaching the campsite.
Once again, as many times before, I am reminded of the power that nature possesses in bringing a group of people closer to both one another, and to the wonders that nature presents before us.
This commune with the outdoors resulted in a memorable, challenging experience for our Rovers. Even before a full night’s rest, conversation was abuzz with interest in future outdoor adventures.
Elfin Lakes Hike Reflections:
A 10hr exposed sun tanning session. – Elvin Lai
This hike opened my eyes as to what was possible when you put your mind into it. I was dreading this hike all week because I felt like I was not prepared, but it couldn’t have been further from reality! That said, I wouldn’t have had such an out of this world (that is my comfort zone) experience, nor the confidence to “just do it” without the support of our tiny hiking crew. – Gwendolyn Tian
Hiking and camping with an awesome group is the highlight of this Elfin Lake trail hike. People assisted with each other in getting ready to the trip, and took care of each one on the adventure. It was a great chance to get to know more about each other, and enjoy an environment without disruptions from our cell phones. – Eloise Liu
I really hope the friendships, trust, and memories that we built on this trip will be remembered and cherished, because I know I will. P.S. Thanks for always waiting for me at the top of the hill!. – Karina Lee
Although the lake was frozen, it did not make a difference at all since the whole journey was what mattered. We were challenged hours and hours by blinding sunlight, steep trails, and heavy snow, but we never gave up. In fact, we persisted. – Nick Pham
