Time Management: How to Kill Time

When we’re loaded with a long list of tasks, it feels as if 24 hours is never enough. We catch ourselves saying, “there are too many things to do, but not enough time”.  Keep in mind that there are people who have less time on their hands and more to do, yet they are are able to achieve much more than others. It isn’t any secret solution, it’s simple. Time management. Time management can be a topic that is easier said than done, luckily, our Rovers have prepared some tips to really help you kill time

Ozzie Tran:

  • Create a to-do list
    • Writing a to-do list helps me to stay on task. By having a physical copy of the list and putting it somewhere where I can easily see it helps me to track my tasks and keep myself accountable
  • Control flexible schedules and stick with your fixed schedule
    • There are certain things that you can control such as how much you decide to sleep, relax or workout. Reduce time for things than you can control, and try to balance your schedule around hours that you can’t control such as work or school.

Karen Tse:

  • Prioritize
    • Prioritize is key! Rank the tasks by level ofurgency and/or level of importance and complete the ones on the top of the list first.
    • Tip: I usually write down a list of to-dos for the next day before I leave work. This way, I can better plan out my day and ensure I know what I have to do when, which makes the day more productive.

Phu Do:

  • Be aware of timing
    • Putting some sort of weight/deadline to items in the list you wrote down, helps you keep accountable by knowing how to prioritize your tasks or to see the urgency of something that has to be done
    • Tip: Break your task into smaller units so you don’t feel overwhelmed when facing a big project.

Vivien Wang:

  • Be honest with yourself
    • Knowing what my strengths and weaknesses are enables you to measure how long each task will take; to anticipate difficulties that you may have when doing a particular task. By doing this, it also helps to mentally and strategically prepare for them.
    • Try working throughout times that you are most efficient. You can try to arrange the most challenging and important tasks during those time slots.
    • Be honest to yourself on what could be potential distractions to you. Create an environment without them to avoid these distractions
    • Tip: Try using apps to block distracting sites when you’re trying to get work done so you can’t access them. Even turning off your phone and putting it out of your reach can help you.

While these tips are great ways to get you started on time management, without proper dedication, you will continue to fall into a slump of procrastination and failure to meet deadlines. As Viven mentions “strong execution is everything, be self-disciplined and committed to the plan.”
