Day 3: An interview with Joseph, Founder of House of Love Malaysia

By Sandra Lee

“I studied child psychology at a university in America, with a strong passion for social work to help people in need. For a while, I was struggling. For 13 years, my friends were doing well in Singapore and I was following my path, receiving an allowance of only 600 ringlets a month (about $200 CAD). I was tempted to steer away and try what my friends were doing.

One day, a child I was caring for called me papa when he said goodbye. I was taken aback. I was very young back then, and was known as ‘uncle’. I wasn’t sure how to respond because I wasn’t sure if I could fulfil that role. My friend then explained to me that even if the child had a mother, a father plays a crucial part in a child’s life.

‘He called you papa because he needs a papa.’

It was at that moment when I decided to be one. God had trained me for 13 years to be the best father I can be, and now, all the children in my home are happy. Now, I can afford to train young people to do what I do; to care for the children living in the House of Love; to feed the hungry people who come to our food bank; and to try to unify all the other groups of dedicated individuals who want to make the world a better place together”.

Our interview with Sir Joseph was inspirational and eye-opening. Here is a man in front of us, who has done all the research to run such an impressive organization that aims, and no doubt will succeed, to feed 150 families. Isn’t it such a funny coincidence that our Rover Crew has a goal to reach 150 active Rovers? Absolutely! He grew up as a Scout too. He carries his company with the Scouting values that the Rovers in 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group are trying to learn.

Here is an interview that Scouter Cecilia conducted as a sneak peek of the man and his grandiose non-profit organization.

Sir Joseph also gracefully gave us some souvenirs!

You can find House of Love on Facebook too, we’d love for you to like them, as we like the work they do and hope you do too!
