Run a quick search on corporate culture and you’ll find pages upon pages of results. Group culture has been discussed in length for decades, but over the last dozen years or so, more and more eyebrows have been raised in intrigue, as leaders attempt to apply these teachings to their own organization.
This Rover Crew runs like a business (a people business) to provide 18 to 26-year-olds an opportunity to learn how to be effective leaders and teammates in a safe environment. As the president-elect, I am taking advantage of the time I have left in this Crew and dedicating the next several months to understand how cultural alignment works for our group.
There are 6 elements of an ideal culture: Leadership, Human Connection, Story, Creativity, Learning, and Ecosystem. Luckily for me, I’ve inherited a team of relationship-driven Rovers and Scouters in my Leadership Team who are eager to learn and to share expertise. Most of my pre-planning involved imagining the ecosystem, an organizational structure, that fosters an environment of teamwork and intersectional functionality. Of course, there are so many other things that need to happen to establish our ideal culture, but for now, let me introduce what we have so far:
Instead of designing a set of departments, we have determined four focuses that we believe need to be considered for our Crew to function at 100%.
Focus #1: Membership Experience
Those who focus on membership experience prioritize the goals, wants, and needs of our members.
Focus #2: Program
Rovers who focus on program will plan and bring to life the value-added deliverables (events, training, and more) that ensure our members are getting what they need to learn and grow from our program.
Focus #3: Operations
Rovers who focus on operations aim to improve crew processes and maintain healthy financials to ensure that the Crew functions at full capacity with full transparency.
Focus #4 Outreach
Rovers who focus on outreach seek to elevate the Rover Crew’s profile in our community through digital and in-person meet and greets, while identifying partnerships within our community to exponentially grow our impact.
