International Service Project 2015 – Where to Next?

“If you do something that has never been done, you will collect treasures that has never been found”
–Jenna Newton.

One of the richest and most memorable experiences our Rovers can attain together is through an international service project, to explore countries we have yet to visit and to meet people of different cultures. Upcoming is the 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group’s fifth iProj to South East Asia, travelling to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Kuching) and Singapore in hopes to broaden our worldly perspectives with the help of our new Scouting friends overseas. Through this perpetual cultural exchange, we are aiming to achieve a number of initiatives and projects that will hopefully enrich the lives of those within these communities.

Kuching-City

Workshops and Presentations
A portion of our service will consist of a number of different workshops and presentations that will be introduced to the local Scouting association. This includes our Rover crew’s processes and procedures in developing leadership training, youth membership growth, and strong Scouting presence.

House-Building Project
We will also be participating in a house-building project with an organization held in Kuching, Malaysia.

Construction of a Community Garden
Our most lasting contribution will be towards the construction of a community garden, where members can meet in an organic and spacious environment. Our vision for this garden is largely for children. In this place, children can learn about how to be environmentally friendly, by participating in after-school community gardening programs and contribute to family sustenance. We would like to help initiate a cycle where knowledge of crops and environmental stewardship can be passed onto the next generation.

Embarking on an international service project will not only allow our contingent to give back to the community and do meaningful projects globally, but will also provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, knowledge, and skills with our peer scouting friends in Asia. We are so excited to start building a stronger cross-cultural friendship with the Malaysian scouts and are very excited to share this experience with you.
